Evanger’s Breed Buzz: Australian Cattle Dog

One of the most intelligent breed, the sturdy and strong Australian Cattle Dog is a working dog bred from Collies, Dalmations, and native Australian Dingos. Also known as the Blue or Australian Heeler, this dog is a loyal, committed, and energetic worker ideal for herding cattle. The dog breed can be blue or red (can be in mottled or speckled pattern), with or without black, blue or tan markings.

Australian Cattle Dogs needs wide-open space to work off energy all day. As a working dog, the breed does best with a job, such as herding, obedience, or agility. Extremely loyal to its family, they do best with strong handlers who are able to establish themselves as “pack leaders”. They make excellent guard dogs, and can easily become dog aggressive without early training.

Their smooth, short coat is very low maintenance, requiring only occasional baths and brushing.

A relatively healthy breed, the Australian Cattle Dog should live about 12 years. This dog breed is prone to hip dysplasia and PRA, with the merle-colored dogs also susceptible to deafness.

An extremely active dog, the Australian Cattle Dog will thrive best on a high quality, protein-based diet like Evanger’s Super Premium Chicken Dinner with spinach and kale. Canned foods provide more bio-available nutrients to support muscle and skeletal health for such an active breed. Evanger’s USA made dog food makes an ideal diet for working dogs and sports exhibitors.
